My personal meeting with

During one of my many visits to Saint-Paul-de-Vence, just outside Nice, where Paul Hervieu’s brother Albert had a very famous Hervieu-art-gallery we were, like always, visiting a very little cafe. We had our coffee and French bread. Then I saw one older gentleman that, in one way or another, looked familiar to me. I said to Albert, my God, I think that is Monsieur Chagall and his wife sitting there. Albert said yes, Madame and Monsieur Chagall are here often. I know them. We live in the same village.

Albert asked me if I would like to say hello to him. Of course, I said.

OK just go there and say something to them. After a minute of thinking I understood that this may be the only chance in my life to say hello to Marc Chagall. As I was going to their table, with very trembling legs I said:

“I am sorry to disturb you Monsieur Chagall, but I would like to tell you that I am very fond of your paintings and graphics. I like your art very much”.

He looked at me and said “that’s nice”. Where are you from? I told him I was from Sweden. Then they both asked me, please, bring your friend Monsieur Hervieu and your coffee and sit down with us.
Believe it not, I am sure that we were sitting together for about twenty minutes and talking. He asked me many questions about Sweden and my work as an art-dealer and collector.

I had my camera with me, as always, but he asked me not to make any photos.
Of course I respected this.
Sorry to say = no photos.

But, it was a most incredible twenty minutes spent with Marc Chagall and his lovely wife!

What a day.
