A report of the finding of the huge
Star of South Africa
the 83.5-carat stone which really started the diamond rush.
The reference to "that fellow Gregory" is to the geologist sent
from London who poured scorn on the idea that diamonds would ever be found in
South Africa.
Gregory was no favourite of the South African press. In his Original report
on the diamond finds he had blamed the local editors for encouraging the stories "by publishing
any communication whatever that is sent to them". At the same time he had speculated that perhaps the diamonds had
been brought to the locality by ostriches. Hence the wry comment. For a long
time afterwards any doubtful stone found was known as
"A Gregory".
