About Port d´Andratx.

Whose long quay is overlooked by Sa Mola promontory, and is set in a long narrow inlet.

On the Mola itself, enduring the passage of time, remains one of the watch towers built in the 16th century to warn the local people of the pirate raids to which the island was subject. From the 15th to the 17th century, this section of the coast was under constant threat of raids by Arab pirates, which explains why we shall come across several towers of its kind, for example those of Son Mas, Son Esteve, Sant Tem, etc. in this area.

To return to Sa Mola, we should point out that nowadays, it is an exclusive area and a spot favoured by well-known personalities from the world of politics, art, literature, the aristocracy, etc. The history of Port d´Andratx, like that of Mallorca´s coast as a whole, is closely associated with the traditions of sailing and emigration.

The people of Andratx in particular have, for as long as can be remembered, chosen the sea as a means of communication, since it provided there easiest route to Palma.

Port d´Andratx is now full of fishing-boats and yachts bobbing on the water, adding to the picturesque character of this unique spot of the Majorcan coast.

In the vicinity of the harbour there are numerous restaurants, modern residential areas and splendid hotels.

Very near the harbour we find the town of Andratx itself, sheltering in a beautiful valley which is bounded to the north by Estellencs, to the east by Capdellá and Calviá, and to the south-west buy the Mediterranean.

The origins of Andratx are uncertain. Some say it is Roman in origin, while others claim that it was founded by Christians fleeing from Turkish pirates. Whatever its true origins, today Andratx is a modern town whose main source of income is its tourist industry, vouchsafed by the beauty of its surroundings.
