Who doesn’t like "Dolphins"?
For all those people sensitive towards animals dolphins are especially
attractive and interesting. I take advantage of the fact that my everyday job
evolves in an dolphinarium,
MARINELAND and that I live and am in contact with dolphins and people visiting
us.
|
|
|
The proverb that says "every job becomes
routine sooner or later" makes no sense to those of us who look after
dolphins. Living with them on a daily basis and looking after them poses us
with challenges, training and constant personal achievement. We could say
that working with dolphins is a luxury. Dolphins enjoy physical contact with
human beings. Trainers spend hours and hours swimming and playing with them.
This way, once they have gained your confidence, together trainers and
dolphins can learn all the pirouettes and games that the public visiting
MARINELAND enjoy so much. |
Good work is normally rewarded with fish, nonetheless, during shows the
dolphins appear to show satisfaction for their good work as if they are proud
of themselves; an act they share with their trainers. A dolphin in MARINELAND
is never obliged to work against his will, nor are they punished.
Daily contact with dolphins provides us with more accurate information on the behavior of their reproductive cycle, echolocation, social
relations etc. To such an extent that all scientific research
on wild dolphins in their natural habitat requires prior knowledge on dolphins
in captivity to be perfected. For all of us working with dolphins,
studying these cetaceans in detail and lending all our experience and support
when a problem arises with dolphins in their natural environment is a great
commitment, such as the epidemic the dolphins registered in the northeast
Mediterranean suffered 1n 1990 which caused great loss of life.
One of the best veterinary teams in the world specializing in marine mammalians
visits our park on a regular basis examining the dolphins
general health and taking samples of blood which are later analysed in a
laboratory. Preventive medicine is very important for ensuring the dolphins well-being.
As so many other marine species, the survival of dolphins is endangered. As
well as the natural dangers cetaceans face in the sea, man imposes serious
threats such as contamination, drifting fishing nets and vast meshes stretching
kilometers which are lowered in high seas. According
to a report from the European Association of Marine Mammalians, (E.A.A.M.),
more than half a million dolphins die every year in accidents involving fishing
nets, in particular those used for catching tuna fish.
There is no doubt about it that in the future our children will hold the reins
of our society and perhaps the we will be able to guarantee the survival of the
dolphin. No words exist to explain the emotion a child feels when he can touch
a dolphin with his own hands. As of that contact the child becomes their most
solid defender. This one of the aims of our educative programme "Encuentro con los Delfines" in MARILAND, to create a commitment of love
and respect towards dolphins in our youngest, and in general towards all
creatures living on our planet. (By Gloria Fernández - Biologist.)
Some days are joyfully unforgettable.
