The island of MALLORCA has certainly proved to be the answer for many of the so-called jet set and for countless others who may have no claim to fame but who can recognise beauty, relaxed charm, boundless sporting and entertainment possibilities, a matchless climate and good value for money (especially with current exchange rates).

MALLORCA is extremely convenient too, with first class air connections to all European capitals and the rest of the world. The brand new airport of Palma de Mallorca is well able to cope with its dense schedule (over 15 million visitors in 1996). Once here, you can keep in touch with world news via satellite TV (BBC and Sky) and also listen to the island's own English language radio station, now in its 15th year o broadcasting.

Yet with all those holidaymakers and part-time residents, the island is not crowded. You can still find idyllic coves to bathe all alone in the crystal clear blue waters of the Mediterranean or your own spot on mile-long beaches of white sand. Country retreats can still be bought a very reasonable prices and you can own your own patch of paradise where you can revel in total peace and tranquillity, swimming in your private pool, picnicing beneath the pine trees or tending the beautiful tropical plants you can grow in your garden.

Of course, if you enjoy the bright lights and the brilliant company of other fun-lovers, MALLORCA offers some of the most sophisticated entertainment in the Mediterranean. Top pop musicians such as Eric Clapton, Julio Iglesias and Sting come to MALLORCA for summer concerts. Or if your preference is for classical music you'll find an excellent symphony orchestra, a reliably fine season of opera at one of the three theatres in Palma and numerous concert festivals. The Pollensa Festival is now in its 45th year and attracts the best soloists from all over th world. The Sunset Concerts held in a historic house just outside Robert Graves' village of Deya are an especial treat for the connoisseur. At a less formal level, you'll also enjoy the concerts on the grass, held every summer around the ninth green of the Real Bendinat Golf Course, where you can recline on a blanket with some nicely chilled champagne and listen to glorious chamber music beneath the stars at midnight.

If golf is your sport, the island will be your Shangri-La, boasting nearly twenty first-class courses. Perhaps you prefer water sports - al around the coast you'll find heavenly havens, ranging from luxury marinas such as Puerto Portals to intimate little harbours where you'll soon know the first names of all the local fishermen.
Surfing, windsurfing, water skiing, scuba diving, jet skiing and spear fishing are all possible practically twelve months of the year. Tennis, squash, horse riding, cycling, lawn and 10-pin bowling ... even a successful English cricket club ... whatever your sport, you'll find more than adequate facilities in MALLORCA.

The population of MALLORCA is and always has been cosmopolitan. The local Mallorcans and the Spaniards are very welcoming and hospitable towards all the other nationalities that come to share the island. It's not a necessity to speak Spanish, most people speak English or German and quite a lot can also handle Scandinavian languages, French, Dutch ... you name it! Of course, if you make the effort to learn Castillian Spanish or the local Mallorcan version of Catalan, then you'll get even more from the island.

The expatriate community has been a feature of Mallorca society for many years and has built up its own network of social clubs, sporting associations, political societies, religious establishments and community centres. You'll find two thriving Anglican churches, a Scandinavian protestant centre with its own chapel, a Salvation Army centre, a Jewish synagogue and many other congregations waiting to welcome you. International bodies such as the Freemasons, the Rotary Club, the Lions Club, etc. are all represented too.
